Found A Baby Chicken That Was Abandoned?
I was feeding my dog and I heard a peeping. I followed it to find a newly hatched baby chicken not a foot away from a mother hen sitting eggs. We have free range chickens and they lay eggs and hatch them when we don't find them. He was partially buried under a box and mostly dried out, but was really cold. I tried to give him back but the mother hen ignored him, and when I persisted she tried pecking at him. I brought him inside and put him in a box with my desk lamp over him because I couldn't find my reptile lamp. I was going to let him dry out until he could walk around on his own and then try giving him to the mother hen. If she doesn't take him, could I try giving him to a different hen? We have a few hens that we've found and they are currently sitting eggs that are almost ready to hatch. Could anyone give me any advice as to keeping him alive or anything? Thank you!
Wait till dark and put the chick under the mom. After feeling and hearing it all night by morning she will think it is hers.
